Ever imagined walking through an ice tunnel into the heart of a glacier? Thanks to scientists and glaciologists, this project got realised and a labyrinth like tunnel was created in Europe’s second largest glacier. This tour is one of a kind and entertaining for the whole family.
In 2010 the bold idea was born to dig into Langjökull glacier to study the glacier from the inside. The tunnel is now the largest man-made glacier tunnel in the world. Scientists and the public can explore the glacier from inside the icecap, which sparks beautiful shades of blue and white, crevasses and other glacial formations.
The adventure starts as you step into the monster truck at the base camp, a specially modified jeep for this trip. Together with your expert guide you’ll embark on an unforgettable journey as you venture up the glacier towards the tunnel. Once you enter you’ll be provided with crampons to place over your shoes to make sure you wont slip on the icy surface. Together with your guide you’ll explore different paths and chambers inside the glacier, some of which have been used for small concerts and other events. This tour is both entertaining and informative as your guide tells you stories of glaciers.
How to prepare
Please dress warm cause inside the tunnel the temperature is around freezing all year round. Hiking boots are recommended but if you don’t have them you are welcome to borrow protective footwear to place over your shoes. Feel free to grab one of the overalls as well to keep extra warm.
Where to meet
The meeting point during the winter months (Oct 16th – May 31st) is at Húsafell Center. During the summer months the meeting point is closer to the tunnel, at Klaki base camp. The road from Húsafell to Klaki is a gravel road only accessible to 4×4 vehicles. If your car is not 4×4 please take the shuttle bus from Húsafell Center. You can also book it here by choosing the option ‘pick up from Husafell’.
Please consider making your trip carbon neutral for just 500 ISK. The fund will go towards planting new trees by Iceland Carbon Fund.
