Geothermal Activity

Hengill is still considered active although it hasn’t erupted for over 2000 years. Because of this volcanic activity the area has multiple hot springs and the geothermal energy is strong enough to power Reykjavík and the south of Iceland. The beautiful fairytale like scenery makes this a popular area for walking and sightseeing as well as horseback riding.

What to Expect

Choose your pick up location in Reykjavík or meet your guide on location in the village Hveragerði where you start the journey. The hike towards Reykjadalur valley is slightly upwards but the trail is well maintained and suitable for anyone in relatively good physical condition. Hiking past multiple little hot springs, warm streams and and volcanic landscapes makes the journey an absolutely amazing experience. Remember to bring your camera. When you reach your destination you get a chance to soak in the warm stream, nature’s best spa treatment.  Where fresh and clean mountain stream meets boiling hot springs you’ll find a warm stream at perfect bathing temperature from 37-40°C. Put on your bathing suit and jump in.

Hiking boots or good sturdy shoes are highly recommended, especially in the wintertime. During snow and frost season your guide will provide crampons to place over your shoes when needed. We recommend bringing some light snacks and water with you, but remember; what you bring in, you take with you back.
