This is an exciting horseback riding tour with an option of a pick up from Reykjavik. You’ll spend 2.5 – 3 hours riding and you should be back in Reykjavik by 13:00. The tour is operated by a farm just outside Reykjavik close by hot springs and geothermal activity making this an exceptionally exciting area to explore from the back of a horse. We highly recommend this tour, especially Jesh who had no prior experience. He’s still dreaming of his own horse farm..
The breed of the Icelandic horse is developed from ponies brought to Iceland by the Norse settlers in the 9th century. This friendly breed unique for being five gaited and their ability to cross rough land. One of the gaits is called tolt which is so smooth it makes you feel like you’re floating on a cloud. During the tour there will be a chance to try this gait with your horse.
Dedicated to an environmental policy and ecotourism the staff actively makes sure their impact on the delicate nature is kept at a minimum. The horses only go one tour a day to make sure they’re never overworked.
Based on your level of experience your guide will choose the perfect horse for you. After you get to know your horse a bit and feel comfortable you start your journey through stunning landscapes. Get ready to ride through a forest and geothermal landscapes, pass hot springs and cross a stream. What an awesome sightseeing tour. In the winter months there’ll be a short break to warm up with some coffee, tea or hot chocolate before you continue the journey back to the farm.
We highly recommend you to bring gloves as it’s more comfortable holding the lead. Wear soft trousers or leggings. It’s good to bring a buff or a thin hat to wear under the helmet. Boots or sports shoes are good but I find boots which reach over the ankle or wellies more comfortable when riding. If you want to bring your camera please bring a waist bag as backpacks cannot be taken on horseback. There is a weight limit for participants of 120kg.
