This trip is a unique journey deep inside volcano Thríhnjúkagigur. The meeting point is just outside Reykjavik but in order to get to the crater there is a moderate hike of 3 km / 1.8 miles which takes about 45 minutes. The hike is definitely worth it, not only because of the unique scenery, which sometimes gave us the feeling we had been transported to a Sci-fi filmset, but what awaited us was an unforgettable journey towards the centre of the earth. But don’t worry, it’s completely safe as the volcano has been dormant for over 4000 years and we’re not expecting it to wake up anytime soon.
When a volcano stops erupting the crater will usually fill up with cooling lava. Thríhnjúkagígur, (yes another Icelandic volcano impossible to pronounce), is a rare exception to this and beneath lies a massive bottle shaped magma chamber. A chamber so big the statue of liberty can easily hide in there. Thríhnjúkagígur, is the only magma chamber in the world you can safely enter. The beautiful coloration and lava formations inside the crater is truly something else.
Your guide will welcome you at the cabin in Bláfjöll before you head together towards the volcano. Enjoy the guided hike through breathtaking landscape towards our base camp where you’ll be provided with helmet, headlight and a harness. Your guides will go over all safety instructions with you before you hike the last bit up to the crater opening. An open cable lift will bring you securely about 120 m / 400 ft down to the bottom which takes about 6 minutes. The expert guides will tell you all about the volcano and be with you at all times in the lift as well as in the crater. You’ll have about half an hour to explore the spectacular and colorful scenery inside of the volcano. Please take as many photos as you like but don’t take anything from the cave such as rocks or other souvenirs and remember; what you bring in, you bring out.
When you’re back from the volcano a warm traditional Icelandic meat- or vegetable soup will be ready for you at the base camp together with some coffee, tea and chocolate to gather energy before the hike back.
If you don’t mind the hike and the open lift then this is a tour not to be missed as there is truly nothing like it.
