Jokulsarlon is situated under Vatnajokull glacier which towers over the breathtaking and ever transforming landscape. Visits by James Bond, Lara Croft and Batman have secured the lagoon on the pop culture map.
The lagoon is about 18 km2 / 7 sq mi and because of the fast pace of melting glaciers the lagoon is currently the deepest lake in Iceland (250 m / 215 ft). Because it’s situated so close to the sea, seawater flows into the lagoon on high tide together with fish which attracts seals. If you watch carefully you might spot them playing around the icebergs.
The amphibian boat tour takes you on a trip between picturesque icebergs and the local expert guides will give you information on the glaciers, geology and culture of the area. Our trusted tour operator is a local company with over 25 years of experience so you’ll be in good hands. The boat cleverly is on wheels so you’ll securely board on land and drive into the lagoon. The tour takes about 30-40 minutes. When boarding you’ll be provided with life vests. Remember to dress warm as the temperature stays low on and around the lake.
It was pouring down, but just as we stepped onboard the sky cleared up and we had the most amazing afternoon tour!
If you like to get closer to the icebergs and the glacier on a faster boat check out the Zodiac Tour.
