Jokulsarlon is Iceland’s biggest glacier lagoon and is situated under Vatnajokull Glacier which towers over the breathtaking and ever transforming ice-scape. James Bond, Lara Croft and Batman have all paid a visit to the lagoon securing it on the pop culture map. Not a bad company that.
The lagoon is about 18 km2 / 7 sq mi and because of the fast pace of melting glaciers the lake is currently the deepest in Iceland (250 m / 215 ft). Being in such close proximity to the ocean; seawater flows into the lagoon on high tide accompanied by fish which is the main attraction for seals into the lagoon. We saw quite a few of them playing around the icebergs. They are out there but if you want to catch a glimpse of them you might need to be patient and keep a watchful eye.
This boat tour offers a small group experience and the zodiacs travel much faster than the classic boats. You can therefore cover a larger area of the lagoon, get closer to the icebergs and as close towards the glacier as considered safe. If you’re lucky you might hear or see a cracking of the outlet glacier or ice break off into the lagoon. You’ll be provided with life vest and a flotation suit but remember to dress warm as the temperature stays low on and around the lake.
Please note that to join this tour you must be taller than 130cm / 4,2 ft.
If you got time we recommend taking a walk down to the beach called Diamond Beach. The name does not come as a surprise, as the sea washes thousands of ice rocks ashore and you’ll see them scattered around the pitch black beach. Truly an unforgettable sight.
If you’re traveling on a budget or prefer a smaller more secluded neighbouring lagoon we recommend Fjallsarlon Lagoon Zodiac Tour.
