This is a unique opportunity to hunt for the northern lights on a beautiful island just outside Reykjavík, away from the city lights. This is an intimate small group tour of maximum 20 participants and ideal for an evening walk and night time photography.
Viðey is a small island just off the coast of Reykjavík Harbour. It was inhabited until the 50’s and Iceland’s first ever stone house was built here in the mid 17th century. This beautiful building now houses a museum, a café and a restaurant. On the island are artworks by Richard Serra and Yoko Ono, and Ono’s Imagine Peace tower sends a light beam up to the night sky from October 9th until December 8th and again from winter solstice until the new year.
Experiencing the Northern Lights dance and twirl around the starlit night sky is a magical experience. This phenomenon occurs when charged particles from a solar flair enter the earth’s magnetic field and collide with molecules in our atmosphere.
They often start out quite faint but can quickly take on different shapes and colours. It’s most common to see green, white or yellow shades and sometimes even purple and blue.
Pop by the ticket office by the old harbour to collect your ticket and meet with your guide and crew of the evening. Videy is only a 20 minute boat ride from the harbour and offers a unique view over the Reykjavík skyline and mountains. Don’t forget your camera and tripod!
