Do you want to experience something truly unique? Snorkeling in Iceland in a crystal clear glacier water with the two major tectonic plates to each side is definitely something to tick off the bucket list. There’s nothing like the feeling of weightlessness as you float over a fissure in a landscape of all imaginable shades of blue.
Silfra is a fissure situated in Thingvellir national park in a continuously expanding rift where the two tectonic plates meet. On the surface Silfra looks like any other stream but once submerged, an underwater world awaits you. Silfra is a popular diving and snorkeling spot due to its crystal clear glacial water which has travelled 50 years underground through porous lava rocks, all the way from Langjokull glacier where it originates. Talking about properly filtered mineral rich water and one of the clearest in the world with visibility of over 120 m / 390 ft. Don’t forget to take a sip!
Book this tour with a pick up from Reykjavík or meet us on location. If you come by car it’s best to park at P5. Only about 5 minute walk from there is the meeting spot where your snorkel guide will welcome you. As unpredictable as the weather in Iceland is, the temperature in Silfra is not. It stays around 2-3°C /35-37°F throughout the year. Feeling cold already? Rest assured, your expert instructor will assist you getting into your dry-suit and make sure the cold water doesn’t find a way to sneak in.
Please wear warm inner layers and you’ll stay nice and warm. You will be provided with a special jumpsuit to put on under the dry-suit. We recommend thick woollen socks, if you got two pairs, wear them both and you are bulletproof.
After the snorkeling adventure hot chocolate and cookies will be ready for you and a heated room to get changed.
