This tour is perfect for the thrill seekers. It combines snowmobiling on top of Myrdalsjokull glacier, a monster truck ride to get you up there and relaxing sightseeing of the two most beautiful waterfalls of Iceland’s south coast on the way back to Reykjavik. It is an easy and fun tour available for all levels.
After a pick up from Reykjavik and about 2,5 hour drive the glacier adventure begins. The tour starts at the glacier base camp where you’ll gear up in insulated overalls, helmets and balaclavas face mask. Do bring warm layers though, warm socks and gloves. If you tend to have cold hands like me, here’s a secret tip, there’s a heater in the handlebars so you’re hands will stay nice and warm. Heaven!
Outside the base camp the specially modified monster truck awaits you to safely bring you up towards the ice cap. The unique landscape you’ll drive past in the super jeep is formed by outlet glaciers forcing their way like a bulldozer so it’s no wonder you hear people sometimes compare this landscape to the moon.
Once you reach the ice cap your snowmobiles are ready for you and your guide will show you how to operate them. Please note that the driver needs to be 17 years of age and hold a valid drivers licence. You’ll ride on the icecap for about one hour surrounded by Iceland’s most famous volcanos such as Eyjafjallajökull and Katla. If you’re lucky with weather the view is phenomenal.
On the way back to Reykjavik you’ll get a chance to visit the two most iconic waterfalls of Iceland’s south coast, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. The cliffs where the waterfalls drop down used to mark the old coast line of Iceland and both waterfalls are about 60m / 200ft high. Skogafoss is exceptionally beautiful and due to the constant drizzle, a double rainbow is a common sight on a sunny day. A pathway leads to the top of the cliffs where you can enjoy the view over the waterfall and the surrounding nature. Seljalandsfoss is equally stunning and in the summer you can access a pathway leading behind the waterfall.
