This tour is an excellent day trip exploring Sólheimajökull Glacier by foot and sightseeing with a pick up from your Reykjavik accommodation. This is an exciting and easy hike and no prior experience of glacier hiking is required.
You’ll explore the stunning landscapes of ice sculptures, crevasses and ridges. The contrast between the ice and the volcanic sand from previous eruptions create a unique landscape in black and white. Volcano Eyjafjallajökull famously contributed a lot of ash back in 2010 to this area. The hike is a lot of fun and your knowledgable guide can tell you all about the glaciers of Iceland and the area. Before heading back to Reykjavik you’ll get a chance to see the picturesque waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
After a pick up from Reykjavik you head to the first location which is Solheimajokull Glacier which is only about 2,5 hour drive. This is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth largest glacier. Your qualified guide will provide you with your glacier gear and explain how to use it. This is an easy and safe 2 hour hike on crampons which you place over your hiking boots as you reach the roots of the outlet glacier. It’s important that you wear good boots with ankle support. If you don’t have them you can rent a pair at the base camp.
The ice cold and fresh glacial water was delicious and so clean! Take a sip
On the way back to Reykjavik you’ll get a chance to visit the two most iconic waterfalls of Iceland’s south coast, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Although the waterfalls are very different they are both about 60m / 200ft high and drop down the cliffs which used to mark the old coastline of Iceland. Skogafoss is exceptionally beautiful and due to the constant drizzle, a double rainbow is a common sight on a sunny day. A pathway leads to the top of the cliffs and where you can enjoy the view over the waterfall and the surrounding nature. Seljalandsfoss is equally stunning and in the summer you can access a pathway leading behind the waterfall offering a unique view.
