This adventurous whale and puffin watching tour takes place on a RIB boat in a small group of maximum twelve people. You’re in good hands with your qualified RIB boat captain and specially trained crew. This type of boat can bring you much faster out on the sea than the classic tour vessel. This gives an opportunity to cover a larger area and therefore it is likelier you’ll spot some whales and dolphins. This tour is operated by a local tour operator which is dedicated to environmental sustainability and follows the strict code of conduct for responsible whale watching.
Over 20 different whale species live around the coast of Iceland. The minke whales and white-beaked dolphins are the most common ones to spot around Iceland and sometimes humpbacks, porpoises and orcas show their tricks too. The relatively shallow ocean surrounding Iceland and the abundance of fish makes it a habitable place for whales and therefore one of the best spots in Europe to catch a glimpse of those beautiful mammals. The Puffin is Icelands iconic bird with its distinct colourful beak.
From May 15th – August 15th while the puffins are in their breeding season, the journey starts by heading out towards the islands. In the cliffs you can view the puffins and other sea birds in their natural habitat. After a little stop you continue further out in search for the whales. Sometimes they can be spotted closer to the shore and other times going further out is needed. The RIB boat offers a unique opportunity to see the whales and dolphins from very close by. After the sea adventure you’ll cruise along the coastline to experience city from a different viewpoint. Enjoy the view of the coastal skyline, the Viking ship sculpture Solfarid and the architecturally stunning Harpa Concert Hall.
Remember to dress warm for the tour but you’ll be provided with all safety equipment, warm overalls and goggles.
Note that this tour may not be suitable for seniors, pregnant women or people with heart or back problems. You must be taller than 145 cm and fit into the overalls; maximum size XXXL
