The midnight sun is a unique experience and during mid summer it just doesn’t get dark in Iceland. We’re full of energy due to the constant daylight and the whales are awake too as long as there’s enough fish in the bay. So where better to experience the golden rays of the evening sun than at sea with the whales and dolphins. This tour is a perfect way to warm up for a night out with snacks and drinks available at the bar and a troubadour to get you in the mood.
This tour is operated by a family run company which are dedicated to sustainability, responsible tourism and follows the strict code of conduct for responsible whale watching.
The relatively shallow water Faxaflói bay and the abundance of fish which they feed on, makes it a habitable place for whales and dolphins. With over 20 whale species living around Iceland, the most common ones to see in the bay are the minke whales and white-beaked dolphins. Sometimes you can spot humpbacks, orcas and porpoises too.
Meet your crew at Reykjavik harbour for an exciting whale watching adventure at sea in the midnight sun. After collecting your tickets your guide and crew will welcome you at an old converted fishing vessel permanently moored in the harbour. Feel free to explore the whale exhibition at the lower deck, either before or after the tour.
After boarding the whale watching vessel and you’re all set to go, your knowledgable guide will tell you all about Iceland’s marine wildlife, geology and the local birds inhabiting the bay. Whenever there are whale sightings the guide will tell you where to look so you won’t miss it. The vessel has several outdoor viewing platforms. Onboard the bar will be open where you can buy refreshments and get into the mood for the night with live music and enjoy the view from inside in the warmth.
Weather conditions influence what you will see which makes every trip unique. Success in seeing whales and dolphins is high and your crew will always do their best to bring you to the best locations. In case of no sightings you’re welcome to join the tour again another day for free and your voucher is valid for two years.
The summer time March-October is when wildlife in the bay is at its peak. During the winter months the weather is more unpredictable and the tour might be operated from a nearby harbour. You will of course be brought there but please take into account that the trip might take longer.
Please note: Dress warm as it can get cold at sea. Feel free to borrow an insulated suit and warm blankets.
