One of the more popular tours in Iceland is whale watching and this one is ideal for the whole family. Included in the price is entrance to a small whale museum in an old fishing vessel. This tour is operated by a local company which is dedicated to environmental sustainability and follows the strict code of conduct for responsible whale watching.
Over 20 different whale species live around the coast of Iceland but the minke whales and white-beaked dolphins are the most common ones to spot around Iceland, though sometimes humpbacks, porpoises and orcas pay us a visit too. The relatively shallow ocean surrounding Iceland and the abundance of fish makes it a habitable place for whales and therefore one of the best spots in Europe to catch a glimpse of these majestic beings.
Downtown Reykjavik harbour is the meeting spot for this exciting adventure on sea. After collecting your tickets you’re invited to board an old converted fishing vessel permanently moored in the harbour where the whale watching crew will welcome you. Feel free to visit the souvenir shop and explore the whale exhibition on board either before or after your tour.
From there you board the whale watching vessel. As you set off from Reykjavík harbour, the expert guides will tell you all about Iceland’s marine wildlife, birds and the land surrounding the bay. Whenever there are whale sightings the guide will explain you which way to look so you won’t miss it. The vessel has several outdoor viewing platforms and onboard there is a café where you can get refreshments and enjoy the view from inside in the warmth.
Weather conditions influence what you will see, which makes every trip unique. Success in seeing whales and dolphins is very high and your crew does their very best to bring you to the top locations. In case of no sightings you’re welcome to join the tour again another day for free or you can receive a voucher instead which is valid for two years. The summer time March-October is when wildlife in the bay is at its peak. The wintertime offers a unique experience with the sun so low it feels like you’re sailing over ocean of golden rays. In the winter the weather is more unpredictable and we may decide to operate the tour from a nearby harbour. We will of course drive you there but please take into account that the trip might take longer.
Please note: Dress warm as it can get cold at sea. You’re welcome to borrow an insulated suit and warm blankets. The tour takes 2,5 – 3,5 hours and is a great adventure for the whole family.
